Show Notes:

As we reach the end of Season 8 of the Wild Minds Podcast, I want to take a moment to reflect on this incredible journey we’ve been on together.

It’s been such a privilege to speak with so many inspiring guests, each contributing their knowledge and experience in reshaping our relationship with the natural world.

In this final episode, I’m diving into some of the reflections and insights I’ve gathered over the season. I’ll share personal thoughts on trust, fear, the power of silence, and the importance of reconnecting with the Earth.

Here’s what’s on my mind as we close this season and look ahead to the next:

  • Fear, paper tigers, and the lifelong practice of letting go.
  • Kahlil Gibran’s poem The River Cannot Go Back, and the comfort that comes from trusting the unknown.
  • The idea that rivers, nature, and the Earth are alive with consciousness—and the invitation to see nature as a subject, not an object.
  • Robert Macfarlane’s experience in the Ecuadorian forest, where everything glows with life and shifts how we perceive the natural world.
  • The science behind beneficial soil bacteria that lift our mood and reduce anxiety—reminding us that the Earth is not just beautiful but medicinal.
  • The recognition that we are open systems, constantly exchanging energy with the Earth, and that this connection shapes our health.
  • The impact of screen-based culture on children and adults, and what’s lost when we stray too far from the embodied, social, and outdoor.
  • The call for deep nature connection as essential to mental health, inspired by John Young’s teachings on seasonal rhythms and future generations.
  • Sam Lee’s reminder of the power of silence and the deep listening it makes possible.
  • The oak tree as a symbol of strength, balance, and the union of masculine and feminine—qualities we carry and can cultivate.

Kahil Gibran: The River cannot go back
It is said that before entering the sea
a river trembles with fear.
She looks back at the path she has traveled,
from the peaks of the mountains,
the long winding road crossing forests and villages.
And in front of her,
she sees an ocean so vast,
that to enter
there seems nothing more than to disappear forever.
But there is no other way.
The river cannot go back.
Nobody can go back.
To go back is impossible in existence.
The river needs to take the risk
of entering the ocean
because only then will fear disappear,
because that’s where the river will know
it’s not about disappearing into the ocean,
but of becoming the ocean.

The diversity of soil bacteria is immense (https://biology.soilweb.ca/overview/) with estimates suggesting that a gram of soil can harbor between 6,000 and 50,000 different bacterial species. This vast microbial community is essential for maintaining soil fertility and ecosystem health.
