Which electric bike should I choose?
Which e bike is right for me?
Electric pedal assisted mountain bikes are something that have gained popularity. E-Bikes as they are called, are here to stay and are a super fun alternative to regular bicycling. They are not dirt bikes as they DO NOT have a throttle but rather are pedal-assisted. This means that you need to pedal to activate the electric motor. Here’s everything you need to know about the E-Bike revolution.
Buying an electric bike can be frustrating especially when you don’t know what you’re getting yourself into. About a year ago, I decided to get an E-Bike off Craigslist for $2,000. A few months later I sold it. It felt unstable and wasn’t powerful enough for my weight. I’m 195lbs btw. I was also worried about who was going to fix the bike if it broke and I just didn’t feel comfortable with the pedaling system and the motor integration.
There are so many new things you will need to learn when it comes to bicycle components; the motor size, battery type and amp hours, brakes and gears and when these mountain bikes are so expensive, you really want to make the right choice the first time so that you don’t have any regrets!
IMPORTANT! There are laws that prohibit E-Bikes on certain trails. Please check the rules and regulations for E-Bikes where you live. I know that some trails where I live do not allow E-Bikes. This is true in the U.S.A. but not sure if there are any laws around E-Bikes in different prats of the world. IMPORTANT!
Now for the fun part, What kind of electric pedal-assisted mountain bike should you buy? It’s almost the same thing that you want to look at when you buy a regular mountain bike.
LOOK AT BIKE FIT FIRST AND FOREMOST
You want to have a mountain bike that fits your body type. If you are a tall guy/gal than you’re probably going to need a bigger bike than if you’re short. Also, WEIGHT is important! If you’re a big guy, you’re going to want a bicycle that can handle your weight. Some mountain bikes come with weight specifications! Trust me, this is more important than you may think!
TEST RIDE BEFORE YOU BUY!
The best way to ensure you got the right E-Bike or any mountain bike is to test ride them out on the trails. Test ride as many bicycles as you can get your hands on. Bicycle shops will usually charge you anywhere between $30 to $100 but most will put that money towards a bike of your choice. Take it for the day or for the weekend.
If they are a quality bike shop then they will let you ride any bike in the store even though this might only be a parking lot test. Now, If they’re a REALLY high quality bicycle store, they will have bicycles that you can take to your trails or inform you where you can demo a certain bicycle.
Nobody should ever get suckered into buying a $3,000 mountain bike without riding it first. That’s not only bad bicycle shop business but also the customer has no idea what he/she is buying or what they are getting into. Don’t ever do this unless you know what you’re buying. Most people don’t. DON’T BE THAT PERSON!
You need to LOVE the bike. It should MAKE you want to go for a ride.
What terrain will you mostly be riding your E-Bike? This is important because you will be narrowing down the list of bikes that you will be testing before you buy.
If you’re riding mellow trails then maybe you don’t NEED or WANT a full suspension mountain bike. Not only will they be heavier, require more maintenance but more expensive!
If you’re mostly going to be riding on pavement then you DO NOT NEED a full suspension mountain bike.
MAKE SENSE!??? Good.
Battery Life and Range
The batteries are packing more of a punch these days as far as the lifespan of the battery and the range that the battery can last you. You can expect most E-Bikes to give you a range between 30 to 100 miles until you need a recharge. How long your battery lasts will depend on the size of battery and how much power the motor it draws. If you pedal the bike on “turbo” all day, you’ll run out of battery much faster than if you used it on a low or an economical setting. It’s a good idea to do a test ride around your neighborhood before you head out and cover long distances. You’ll want to figure out how long that battery will last you because these bikes are HEAVY.
These mountain bikes are heavy, heavier than a regular mountain bike. How heavy? Well, this is going to depend on the components, the frame material and what kind of riding the E-Bike is intended for.
E-Bikes are FUN!
E-Bikes still require to be pedaled!
E-Bikes will still get you fit!
Know what kind of terrain you will be riding before making a buy.
DEMO an E-Bike before you make a purchase decision. Remember, the bike has to fit you and your riding style.
It’s better to spend more money on a bike you really LOVE than buy a mountain bike that you just like. Not only will the mountain bike last you longer but you’ll definitely be riding more and that’s what you want!
